Quite Simply...Beautiful Things Feature and a Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Our Christmas turned out to be a little different than we had planned.  Christmas Eve day landed us at the urgent care for our youngest, then Christmas morning around 1:00am took us to the ER followed by being admitted to the peds unit.  Influenza B, Strep throat and an ear infection, followed by LOTS of meds, I think we are now ready to ring in the New Year!  Thankfully, she is doing much better now.

What a crazy week we had and it's already 2013, how did that happen?!

Chalk Paint Stencil Project

Hello, hope you all are having a beautiful weekend!  We just finished up training some new Chalk Paint™ retailers from Arizona and Utah.  We had a great time and hope they did too.  If you are in the Mesa area, stop by and visit Wood Creations Furniture and coming to Vernal, Utah in September is Ooh La La & Friends.  Both are wonderful, creative, and talented and will be able to help you with all your Chalk Paint needs.

Looking back over our photos, I realized that we never shared our door makeover.  We did it awhile ago, but I forgot all about it.  In our store, we have a long hallway leading back to the bathroom door.  It was rather boring, so we decided to add some Chalk Paint (of course!) with a stencil

 Super quick and easy to do, I did it in an afternoon between customers.  I used a combo of Old Ochre, French Linen and Coco to add some variation and interest.

 Now, when you walk down the hall, there is something pretty to look at.

Chalk Paint™ Link Party

I know it has been a little quiet for us here in the blog world, but I can assure you nothing could be further from the truth in reality!  We have been in the middle of completely renovating our kitchen and our store, both at the same time!  Crazy, I know, and it actually wasn't planned to be that way, but that is just the way life is, isn't it?  We have so many photos and things to share, now just to find the time...

I think the theme from last week's link party was stencils!  So many beautiful pieces.  I love how Kathy from Life on Lakeshore Drive created her own stencil on this lovely little table.  She used Coco and Old Ochre to add a little extra design to her project.  You are very patient, Kathy, what a great idea!

April, from A Heart's Desire scored this island for F-R-E-E and just added some French Linen that she already had on hand to complete and personalize it for her kitchen.  Can't beat that!

A Birthday and A Project

Hope you all had a beautiful weekend!  Our littlest one turned 6 on Saturday and we had an unusual, but lovely birthday party for her.  True to her little independent, nature loving spirit, she wanted to go fishing.  So, we had her birthday party at the lake!  It was a beautiful evening and we caught enough fish for a delicious dinner on Sunday night.  Much more enjoyable than Chuck E Cheese!

We wanted to share this little beauty with you.  

This elegant display case had wonderful curves and carvings, but was just too heavy and dark.

So we lightened it with French Linen.

Distressed back to reveal the wood.

Dry brushed with a little Old White.

Clear Wax for a luscious feel and finish.

Finished the inside with Old Ochre

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Link Party

 I am really liking this multi-tone look that Leone Design created. Martha custom mixed a color using CoCo with a touch of Provence for the body, and Old Ochre for the bottom drawer.  Also, coveting the strong box she scored from the flea market...love your style Martha!

 Next, check out this beautifully updated piano that Nicole from Doodles and Stitches worked on while her husband was out of town.  She had planned on using Old White, but decided to go bold with Provence, and what a perfect color choice!  Nicole did complain about the dust from sanding when she was distressing the piano, this is one reason Annie recommends to wax first, then sand to distress.  No mess!  Another option is to distress prior to waxing by using a wet terry cloth towel versus sand paper - again eliminating the dust.  Either way, it is beautiful, and I enjoyed reading Nicole's story that this piano has been in her family for a number of years and is now updated for many more years to come!

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Linky Party!

Our weather here in Colorado has just been gorgeous! I love spring, can't wait to get our garden planted and start enjoy fresh tomatoes again. Thank you for all the beautiful projects you linked up last week, it was hard to make a decision.

Love Town and Country Living's decoupage desk! After 15 years and never fully being satisfied with this desk, Jennifer took some Old Ochre and some script paper and created this stunning masterpiece! Simply beautiful, I will definitely be keeping this idea in mind for a future project.

Michele at Knot too Shabby caught my eye with her twin dressers. The one on the left is painted with Old Violet and Old White and the twin on the right is painted with Emperor's Silk and Pure White. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Link Party

What a beautiful day yesterday was and today is shaping up to be the same! Gorgeous spring weather! We spent the afternoon outside prepping the garden for planting, I can't wait for garden fresh tomatoes. I definitely have spring fever!

Martina at Northern Nesting did a fabulous job on this little piece. After Old Ochre and CoCo, it looks divine in her entry! Love the color combination you chose, Martina.

And, what can I say? I am a sucker for french script. Stiltskin Studios transformed these end tables in Old Ochre and added a french poem stencil. Michele, I am scheming where to put these in MY living room!

Our weekend was spent playing in the snow! Here is a foot of snow, followed by 8 more inches the next day. One of the blessings of living at 7200 feet is snow days!

Wow!! Check out this amazing chalk painted kitchen makeover from Whimsical Perspective. Laura finished this makeover in just a few days and with 4 quarts of ASCP. I love the color combo of French Linen and Old Ochre.

Gail's Decorative Touch put the finishing touch of Primer Red and Graphite on this china cabinet and transformed an ordinary piece into one that will be cherished.

Sometimes you just have to try

Thank you so much for the well wishes. It is not often at all that I am sick and I have never spent the whole weekend in bed! After the antibiotics kicked in, I am finally doing better. Now, I get to step in and play nurse as our two youngest ones are sick; at least I know exactly how they feel!

We wanted to share our latest project with you. Brad and I work very well together, we love working together and creating together. Finish each others sentences and thoughts kind of thing. After 12 years of interior design, it is not very often that we disagree on a project or a piece. This one is one of those exceptions.

When we first found this bombay chest, we knew style wise, it was perfect. What we disagreed on was how to finish it. The wood finish was actually in really good condition. I mean like new, perfect, condition. It is rare that we find a great piece in great condition and at a great price.

I wanted to lightened it up a bit. I have really liked seeing the two tone look with wood and paint and wanted to leave some of the wood. He not only disagreed, but was very adamant about it. He wanted the entire piece painted. After sitting unpainted for a very long time, I finally convinced him to let me paint it the way I was envisioning it and then if he still didn't like it, he could repaint it his way.

Since the red tones are very strong on the wood, I picked Old Ochre to help soften and warm the contrast. It really is just a gorgeous color.

Brad watched me take out the drawers and paint them and he would walk by and tease me saying there is no way it would look right and he would be repainting it soon himself.

It wasn't until everything was put back together and it was sitting in our living room that he started to warm up to it. After living with it for a little while, and I think the influence of family and friends seeing it and falling in love with it finally had him convinced.

Now, it is one of his favorite pieces...now for sale in our store.

Sometimes, you just have to try it first to be convinced.

(I know I will be eating these words before too long, I'm sure ; )
