Dark Wax - Bringing out the details

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Linky Party!
So many gorgeous pieces to see.
We will definitely be making this a regular weekly feature on our blog.
Be sure to come back and check it out and link up your piece next Tuesday.

Our next project is a sofa table we found on Craigslist.
Beautiful details, not a very pretty finish in honey glazed oak.
It is much happier now
The dark wax really brings out all the detail carvings
No problem covering the oak grain and finish
From boring to stunning! Completed in about 2 hours start to finish!
The table was painted with Paris Grey, then the detailed areas were dry brushed with Old White. A coat of Clear Wax followed by Dark Wax to accent. This is where our Wax Brush really comes in handy to work the wax into the carved areas, much easier to achieve the right look and you use less wax with the brush.

Don't forget about our 4 oz. Chalk Paint sample pots that are available for online ordering.

  1. The dark wax was the perfect way to go. Really amps up the drama of this piece.

  5. Your table looks so great. I painted a beautiful antique vanity the other day in old white chalk paint mixed with a little blue. I then put clear wax on. Today I wanted to add more detail so I tried the dark wax and it was so dark that I had to completely repaint the area I put it on. I tried to get it off really fast but it dried too fast. Could you give me a pointer on using the dark wax that I might be missing? Thanks so much.

  8. Sandi - Try applying the dark wax just after the clear wax (no more than 5-10 minutes later). You want the clear wax to still be tacky when you apply the dark wax, that way it is workable. Also, the dark wax goes a long way, so you don't need a whole lot. You can also use the clear wax as an "eraser" to take the dark wax off.
